CABIAO, Nueva Ecija Police security here have been tightened following intelligence reports that a suspected drug syndicate based in Occidental Mindoro has sent out hit men to assassinate National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) director Reynaldo Wycoco who hails from this town.
According to intelligence reports reaching the local police, hit men posing as agents of the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) have been sighted here several times this month supposedly to conduct surveillance operations against Wycoco.
The NBI director has been going here occasionally to visit his parents.
The intelligence reports added that a white, unmarked helicopter was seen hovering over the town and the house of Wycocos brother-in-law in Barangay San Fernando Sur at least three times.
An intelligence source, which requested anonymity, said the deployment of fake NICA agents and the aerial surveillance were meant to intimidate Wycoco whose relentless crusade against illegal drugs has gotten the ire of drug syndicates.
"These (moves) are apparently part of a psy-war to slow down Wycoco from pursuing criminal elements," the source said.
The local police stepped up security after a check with NICA revealed that it had not officially deployed any agents in the province, particularly this town.
