22 Cebu schools increasing tuition, other fees

CEBU — Twenty-two colleges and universities in the province have informed the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) of their plans to increase tuition and other school fees from eight to 100 percent this coming school year.

Based on CHED records, majority of these schools also raised their tuition last school year.

Those which have informed the CHED of their plans to increase tuition are the following: Cebu Institute of Technology (10 percent for tuition and 6.5 percent for other fees); College of Technological Science (8 percent); Cebu Roosevelt Memorial College (15 percent); Danao Gullas College (10 percent); Salazar Institute of Technology (10 percent);

Systems Technology Institute (9 percent); Toledo Gullas College (10 percent); University of Visayas-Mandaue City (10 percent); University of San Carlos (7 percent and 10 percent for miscellaneous fees); University of San Jose-Recoletos (13 percent);

Velez College (15 percent and 10 percent for miscellaneous fees); University of Southern Philippines (10 percent); Bantayan Southern Institute (10 percent); and Cebu Normal University (10 percent for undergraduates, 92 percent for doctoral studies and 100 percent for graduate school).

The University of Visayas-Cebu City and AMA Computer College will increase their miscellaneous and other fees by five percent and 10 percent, respectively, but will not adjust their tuition.

Saint Theresa’s College-Cebu will be increasing only its tuition, by 15 percent.

Four other schools — Cebu Doctors’ College, Felipe Verallo Memorial College, Manto Memorial Foundation College and SIT-Madredejos — have also filed their intent to increase tuition, the percentage of which they have yet to determine.

Eleven other colleges and universities in Central Visayas have also notified CHED of their plans to hike tuition and other school fees.

In Bohol, the Divine Word College and Philippine Maritime Institute will increase their tuition and other fees by 10 percent and 20 percent, respectively. The University of Bohol will raise its miscellaneous and other fees by 10 percent.

In Dumaguete City, the Foundation University will hike its tuition from 10 to 24 percent, depending on the course.

The Diaz College will implement a 16-percent hike for undergraduate courses and 14 percent for graduate studies. The Villaflores College and Saint Paul College-Dumaguete will increase both tuition and other fees by 15 percent.

The Saint Francis College in Guihulngan, Negros Oriental will enforce a 10-percent hike for both its tuition and other fees, while Silliman University will increase school fees from five to 10 percent, depending on the course. Freeman News Service
