Comelec disqualifies Duterte’s sis

-
DAVAO CITY — The Commission on Elections has disqualified Jocelyn Duterte, the younger sister of first district Rep. Rodrigo Duterte, from running for mayor, the same post her brother is seeking.

The Comelec en banc, in a resolution last week, declared the younger Duterte a nuisance candidate, saying she lacked the political machinery to launch a massive mayoral campaign.

The Comelec also cited Jocelyn’s failure to file her income tax return for the past two years.

Duterte sought his sister’s disqualification, claiming that her candidacy would spoil the votes intended for him.

Since the campaign started last month and while awaiting for the Comelec decision on his sister’s candidacy, Duterte used "Rody," instead of "Duterte," in his campaign.

However, Comelec Region 11 director Lirio Joquiño said Jocelyn’s lawyers can still appeal her case.

"It is now up to her lawyers to file a motion for reconsideration," Joquiño said.

Duterte alleged that his sister was paid by his political rivals to join the mayoral race.

Jocelyn, however, insisted that she is more than qualified to become mayor, having the educational and leadership requirements and the commitment to serve the city.

Incumbent Mayor Benjamin de Guzman has denied allegations he was behind Jocelyn’s candidacy, claiming he never associated with her.

"Why would I pay her? I would rather use the money for my campaign expenses," he said.
