MANILA, Philippines — Since Gabbi Garcia and Mavy Legaspi are fans of “Pinoy Big Brother” and grew up watching the reality TV program, it’s safe to say that they were game to host it when the opportunity presented itself.

Their work has already commenced with the show’s premiere yesterday. It’s an honor and privilege for them to be part of the groundbreaking “PBB: Celebrity Collab Edition” that features talents from GMA and ABS-CBN for its 20th year.

“I was offered this job and siyempre, nagulat talaga ako (of course, I was really surprised),” said Mavy of how the work landed in his lap in a press conference. “Lahat naman tayo fan ng ‘PBB’ (we’re all fans of ‘PBB’). I also watched ‘PBB’ growing up. The last season I watched actually was Alexa’s season.”

Mavy and Alexa Ilacad are in charge of the show’s official online tambayan (hangout) where they will read comments from viewers and create a healthy space and environment for everyone, as shared by Mavy. His participation in “PBB” allows him to work with his friend Alexa and other “PBB” hosts such as Bianca Gonzalez, Robi Domingo and Melai Cantiveros.

As for Gabbi, hosting the “PBB Updates” and some of its primetime and weekend presentations is somehow closest to her wish of being a housemate. She auditioned for the “PBB Teen” 4, where Myrtle Sarrosa won.

“I’ve been such a fan of ‘PBB,’” said she. “When they announced on TV (the audition for new housemates at that time), I was literally a kid watching the television in my room. I saw ‘PBB’ audition… I asked my mommy to accompany me, telling her, ‘Mommy, I wanna line up and I wanna join.’”

She and her mom went to the Mall of Asia, recalled Gabbi, and her number was 3,900-something among 5,000 auditionees who showed up that day.

“I was so curious as a kid to see what’s really going on inside the house and luckily, I got in the first screening and in the second screening, it (the venue) was inside Kuya’s house (the Big Brother’s house), hindi na ako na-bless makapasok after that. So today, it is such a full circle moment for me to be able to, you know, audition how many years ago and now as a host,” said she. “I’m so humbled and I’m so grateful for this opportunity. I’m thankful to the bosses of GMA and ABS-CBN for considering me to be part of this history and I’m really excited to get to know all the housemates and to get to see the house.”

Like her, Mavy is also looking forward to getting to know the housemates and doing his hosting work with Alexa. He added that there’s pressure that comes with it but he doesn’t want to think about it. “I want to give my best sa lahat ng mga audience, who’s gonna watching ‘PBB,’” said he.

During the presscon, the hosts also spoke about their “game plan,” as one may put it.

“I feel like it’s also the same like being a housemate, I will study until maka-research sa kung ano ang pwede kong gawin (I’ve come to know what else I could do) and at the same time I don’t want to plan things,” said Gabbi. “I don’t want to strategize that much. I just want to be myself when I host ‘PBB.’ I want to be as authentic as possible, ayun gusto ko lang ding magpakatotoo as a host. I don’t want to be pressured na kailangan kung sundan si ganto, si ganto. I wanna be myself… I just wanna let things unfold naturally for me.”

Mavy was also on the same page with Gabby by saying, “I just want to let things naturally unfold, but besides that, I think it’s just getting to know different types of personalities. So, nagbabasa din ako, like, online, of course, mga libro (I also read up available information online and books on personality). I have a cousin who is a graduate of BS Psychology, I want to get to know the different types of personalities.” It is part of Mavy’s preparation as a “PBB” host.

Since both are fans of “PBB,” Gabbi and Mavy are aware of the possibility that hosts are also getting invited by Big Brother as housemates to do certain tasks for a limited time.

“Ayun kinakabahan (I feel nervous)… I’m also familiar with the tradition na yung mga hosts nga pinapasok sa bahay ni Kuya,” said Gabbi. “So, ako follower lang ako sa tasks ni Kuya (I’m just a follower of Big Brother’s tasks). Ngayon ang task ni Kuya sa akin ay mag-host, mag-host po ako, hindi ko lang alam kung ano yung following task (Now, my task is to host and I don’t know what’s going to be Big Brother’s next task for me). Hopefully, ikaw na po ang bahala Kuya sa akin (Big Brother will take care of me).”

“I’m excited but at the same time nakakakaba din, parang retreat lang (if ever I will consider it as a retreat),” shared Mavy. “That’s what they say, it’s like a retreat. So, I look forward to that.”

Gabbi and Mavy were also asked during the interview to nominate celebrities to stay inside Big Brother’s house if given the chance. Gabbi’s answer was Mavy, and the latter’s reply was his twin sister Cassy Legaspi.

Watch and follow the unfolding narrative of “PBB: Celebrity Collab Edition” weeknights at 10 and weekends at 6:15 p.m. on GMA.
