MANILA, Philippines — Award-winning director Brillante Mendoza revealed that Coco Martin replaced Aljur Abrenica in his Summer Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry "Apag."

In an interview with the media in his Mandaluyong home, Brillante said Aljur backed out of the project.

“Pero at the same time, parang ano, e, matagal din ang mga usapan namin ni Aljur saka alam kong Kapampangan siya. So, parang… ayun. Pero siguro it’s not really meant sa kanya 'yung project,” Brillante said.

“Ayun, tumawag at nag-back out a few days before pull out. Hindi niya sinabi at all. Wala na siya. Pero according to the manager, parang natakot siya. At saka ano, nung nag-Kapampangan daw siya sa kanila, sabi, sabi nung manager… pinagtawanan daw siya ng mga kapatid niya saka nung tatay niya. 'Yung parang… alam mo 'yun? Hindi authentic. Siguro na-insecure siya,” he added.

Brillante said he did not expect Aljur's departure from their project. Thankfully for the director, his long-time collaborator, Coco Martin, offered to star in his project.

“Siyempre nataranta ako. Nataranta ako! Kasi, naka-set up na kami, 'di ba? Nung araw na 'yun, nagkausap kami ni Coco. Sabi ko, ‘Ewan ko, may problema ako.’ 'Pag may problema siya sa set ng 'Probinsyano,' tumatawag 'yan. Ang sabi ko, ‘May problema ako, ganyan-ganyan! Si Aljur, nag-back out!’" he said.

“Sabi niya, ‘Bakit?’ Tapos kuwento ako, ganyan-ganyan. Sabi niya, ‘Kung wala lang akong problema sa ano, 'di ako nagte-taping, ako na yan, e!’ Hindi ako naniwala sa kanya. Kasi, busy siya. ‘Paano ka mawawalan ng taping, e, araw-araw nagte-taping ka?’

“E, magpa-Pasko yata 'yun. Sabi niya, ‘Hindi, may break ako.’ Sabi niya, ‘May break ako ng ganito-ganito.’ E, di tinawagan ko siya the following day. ‘Uy, seryoso ka ba?’ Sabi niya, ‘Oo!’ sabi niyang ganun. ‘O, kailan ka libre?’ ‘Puwede ako sa ganito-ganito.’

“Sabi ko, ‘O sige, sige! Ayusin ko ang schedule.’ O, di nag-shooting kami bigla. Wala siyang Christmas vacation. Nag-shooting siya.”

An official entry to the first Summer MMFF, "Apag" is a star-studded film starring Coco, Jaclyn Jose, Gina Pareño, Julio Diaz, Mercedes Cabral, Gladys Reyes, Lito Lapid, Ronwaldo Martin, Shaina Magdayao, Joseph Marco, Vince Rillon and Mark Lapid.
