MANILA, Philippines — At least 210 drivers of public utility vehicles (PUVs) were pulled over by authorities during the first day of the government’s crackdown on old vehicles and smoke belchers in the metropolis yesterday.
The Inter-Agency Council on Traffic (IACT) said 26 drivers were summoned for smoke belching.
The IACT issued citation tickets against 184 motorists for driving PUVs that have defective seatbelts, worn-out tires and other violations.
IACT personnel also impounded two buses, two jeepneys and a tricycle.
Transportation Undersecretary Thomas Orbos said the government’s campaign dubbed “Tanggal bulok, Tanggal usok” would be strictly implemented.
“No more warnings will be issued. Vehicles will be impounded and we will issue citation tickets against erring drivers,” Orbos said.
He said the drive against old and dilapidated vehicles was part of the government’s PUV modernization program.
Under the program, old jeepneys would be phased out and replaced with Euro 4-compliant units.
Orbos said PUV drivers and operators should ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy.
Transport groups earlier said they would launch a strike this month to oppose the shift to modern jeepneys.
