UP resumes tuition collection

MANILA, Philippines - University of the Philippines president Danilo Concepcion has reversed earlier announcements suspending the assessment and collection of tuition and other fees in some campuses of the university this semester.

Concepcion issued a memorandum on Monday setting the deadline for the payment of tuition and other fees at all UP campuses on Aug. 25.

The announcement was made a day before the start of the official registration period in campuses where the suspension of assessment and collection were earlier announced.

The memorandum said it supersedes all previous issuances on the matter.

Last month, UP Diliman chancellor Michael Tan said assessment and payment of fees will be suspended indefinitely pending the issuance of clear guidelines on the government’s free higher education policy.

The administrations of UP campuses in Baguio, Manila, Los Baños and Mindanao followed suit.

But in his latest memorandum, Concepcion said the university will implement the free tuition policy on top of the existing financial support of the university to low-income households.
