Quezon City fire leaves 40 families homeless
MANILA, Philippines - At least 40 families were left homeless by a fire that destroyed 20 houses in a residential area in Quezon City yesterday.
The blaze started just before 9 a.m. and reached third alarm around five minutes later. It was declared under control at around 10 a.m., said Quezon City fire marshal Senior Superintendent Manuel Manuel.
Firefighters put out the fire at around 10:30 a.m., Manuel said in a text message. The affected area is in Barangay Fairview, just behind the Fairview police station.
Police officers were in full battle gear in preparation for the possible transfer of detainees should the fire reach the station.
Probers said the fire started on the second floor of a two-story house owned by a couple only identified as Paulo and Cookie.
A resident, Roy Tinada, 39, sustained burns on his right wrist.
Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the blaze. A total of 37 firetrucks and three ambulances responded to the scene.
