NAIA runway closed for emergency repair
MANILA, Philippines - Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s (NAIA) runway 06-24 was closed for three hours starting at past 1 p.m. yesterday due to an emergency pothole repair, affecting several departing and arriving flights.
Manila International Airport Authority general manager Ed Monreal said the pothole was 2.5 meters wide, seven meters long and two inches deep.
The closure was announced just when Thai Airways flight TG621 bound for Bangkok and Eva Air flight BR272 bound for Taipei, with more than 200 passengers, were about to pull out of the aerobridges at the airport’s Terminal 1.
“This pothole happened in the course of flight operations. I ordered an emergency repair, disrupting our operations at this time of the day, rather than wait for our daily runway closure after the last flight tonight,” Monreal said. “I will never compromise safety of flights and passengers.”
Despite the closure, Monreal said international flight operations continued on a limited scale on domestic runway 13-31, which can accommodate aircraft up to the Airbus 320 series in size.
