MANILA, Philippines - Former Caloocan City mayor Macario “Boy” Asistio Jr. passed away yesterday morning, six days after he was rushed to the hospital due to a heart attack. He was 80.

Asistio was taken to the Antipolo Medical Center on Wednesday night and slipped into a coma the next day, according to his nephew Caloocan Vice Mayor Macario Asistio III.

“He suffered a cardiac arrest. His blood pressure dropped and his brain lost oxygen, according to his doctors,” the younger Asistio told The STAR.

Asistio died at 10:55 a.m., leaving behind his longtime partner actress Nadia Montenegro and daughters Ynna and Alyanna.

Asistio started his political career in 1980 as Caloocan mayor until 1986. He was reelected in 1988 and served until 1995.

He ran for reelection in the 2013 and 2016 elections but lost to incumbent Mayor Oscar Malapitan.

Asistio’s remains will lie in state at the Loyola Memorial Chapel along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.
