MANILA, Philippines - At least 300 homes and structures were damaged by a tornado that ripped through parts of Manila on Sunday, an official said yesterday.

The tornado passed through Baseco Compound, Sampaloc, Intramuros and Lawton.

Johnny Yu, Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office director, said “informal settlers in Baseco were the ones hit hard. Fifty to 60 shanties were destroyed, then a fire broke out.”

Mayor Joseph Estrada visited Baseco Compound yesterday and talked to barangay officials to find out what the affected residents need.

He also directed the city’s social welfare department to continue providing food and clothing.

“We are fortunate that no one died or suffered serious injuries. We, at the city government, will provide whatever help they need,” Estrada said.

He said the city government will also distribute plywood and iron sheets to help residents repair their homes.

Two residents were hospitalized and 15 others were given first aid after being hit by debris as the tornado passed.
