San Juan clash of clans: Zamora wants debate with Gomez

MANILA, Philippines – San Juan City Vice Mayor Francis Zamora yesterday reiterated his challenge for a debate with Mayor Guia Gomez to present their platforms before the voters.

The debate should be patterned after the recent presidential debate in Cagayan do Oro City to allow the people of San Juan to directly ask them questions, Zamora said in a radio interview.

It was the second time that Zamora, son of San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora, challenged Gomez to a debate.

Zamora has decided to challenge Gomez in the mayoral race in a bid to end the 36-year rule of the Estradas in San Juan.

Gomez earlier refused to engage in a debate with Zamora, saying the people of San Juan can speak for the accomplishments of the Estradas.

Gomez is the mother of Sen. JV Ejercito-Estrada.

The Estradas and Zamoras were long-time political allies until the Estrada patriarch, Manila Mayor and former president Joseph Estrada, ditched the Zamoras.

Gomez’s running mate is Janella Estrada, daughter of detained Sen. Jinggoy Estrada.

Another Estrada kin, Jana Ejercito, is running for a congressional seat against the elder Zamora.

Despite the rivalry, Congressman Zamora did not rule out reconciliation with the Estradas.

He said this may be possible after the May 9 elections.
