MANILA, Philippines - A two-way radio, tuned to the frequency of the Bureau of Corrections radio communications network, was found in the possession of an inmate during a raid on the New Bilibid Prison’s maximum security compound yesterday morning.
The two-way VHF radio enabled the inmate to monitor the movement of prison guards, NBP superintendent Richard Schwarzkopf said.
The scope of the BuCor’s radio communications is limited to the 19-hectare prison complex and no confidential information is discussed on the network, he said.
“But they can monitor our movement, particularly during sweeping operations,” Schwarzkopf added.
He also said he is withholding the inmate’s name until two other two-way radio sets, also in the possession of inmates, are recovered.
There are 15,000 inmates housed in 13 dormitories at the maximum security compound.
Among the other prohibited items seized during yesterday’s raid are a fully loaded .45 caliber pistol, mobile phones, a Wi-Fi booster, air conditions, refrigerators, liquefied petroleum gas tanks, a remote-controlled toy helicopter, flat-screen television sets and water dispensers, Schwarzkopf said.
The pistol was found in one of at least three kubols or makeshift huts at dormitories occupied by the Batang City Jail gang. These huts were later dismantled.
Schwarzkopf said they are still trying to find out who owns the gun.
Inmates caught with contraband face suspension of their visiting and good conduct privileges. Inmates at the national penitentiary are entitled to 20 days per month of good conduct credit that could be deducted from their sentences.
