Ramil Bajo, Rey Galupo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A former official of the Manila Police District (MPD) was killed, allegedly by his erstwhile driver who broke into his house in Sta. Cruz, Manila early yesterday morning.

Retired Chief Superintendent Cipriano Herrera, 77, former commander of MPD Station 3, died from six stab wounds at the Metropolitan Hospital, according to Senior Police Officer 2 Charles John Duran.

Police said Herrera was a professor at the Manuel L. Quezon University.

Duran said their investigation showed that Herrera went to the kitchen at around 3:30 a.m. to eat when he saw the suspect looking for things he could cart away.

The suspect reportedly drew a knife and attacked the victim.

“There were signs of struggle because of the wounds suffered by the victim. He fought off the suspect but he was overpowered,” Duran said.

The suspect escaped using the victim’s Ford Escort with license plates ACA-1295.

Police are tracking down Herrera’s former driver, Allan Liwanag, 40, a resident of Samar.

A neighbor of Herrera told police that Liwanag managed to enter the house through the fire exit.

Another neighbor said the former MPD official had no known enemies.

Prior to the attack, the suspect was reportedly fired by Herrera for being a drug dependent.
