DOJ orders probe of Bilibid gang rape

Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) to investigate the alleged gang rape of an inmate’s wife at the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa two years ago.

In a one-page endorsement dated Oct. 14, Justice Undersecretary Francisco Baraan III directed BuCor Director Ricardo Rainier Cruz III to look into the complaint of one of the convicts that prison guards and inmates raped his wife.

Baraan ordered Cruz to make an “early submission of the subject comment and recommendation.”

The DOJ move was in response to the request of Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno calling for an investigation into the allegations of the inmate.

The inmate wrote the Supreme Court regarding the matter on Sept. 23.

The identities of the inmate and his wife have been withheld.

Based on the complaint, the alleged victim was raped in January 2013.
