MANILA, Philippines - Promotion awaits two members of the Eastern Police District (EPD) who shot dead one of two motorcycle-riding men who robbed a former overseas Filipino worker in Pasig City recently.
EPD director Senior Superintendent Jose Hidalgo recommended the promotion of Police Officers 2 Jay Laila and Catherine Capinpin.
“I recommended the promotion of Laila and Capinpin to the next higher rank for their courage,” Hildalgo said.
The EPD chief also recommended citation awards for 13 other police officers who helped Laila and Capinpin during the commotion that led to the neutralization of Rodel Gamayo and the arrest of his cohort, Jezreel Bierre.
Gamayo and Bierre were identified as the ones who tried to rob 65-year-old Rogelio Tabios Jr. along Dr. Sixto Antonio Avenue in Barangay Caniogan, Pasig on Oct. 10.
Laila and Capinpin were off-duty and on their way home when they spotted Tabios being robbed by the suspects.
The two introduced themselves as police officers. However, Gamayo refused to surrender and opted to shoot it out with the police, resulting in his death. He was declared dead on arrival at the Rizal Medical Center.
Bierre escaped toward Barangay Maybunga, prompting Laila and Capinpin to call for backup.
Police said Gamayo and Bierre were allegedly responsible for a series of robberies in Pasig City.
