MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo de Manila University varsity basketball player John Apacible on Tuesday issued an apology for his apparent drunken antics in Quezon City, which went viral on social media.
“I am asking forgiveness for what I did. I know I committed a mistake and because of this I am ashamed for my family, my team, school and everyone who were affected,” Apacible said in a letter posted on the university’s Facebook page.
“I was only thinking of myself and I forgot my responsibilities. I am ready to accept the consequences of my actions,” he added.
Apacible, 19, was caught on video inebriated and showing a protocol plate to businessman Ryan Bautista, who confronted him for drunk driving on Sunday.
The video, initially posted by Top Gear Philippines on its Facebook page, showed the Blue Eagles player introducing himself as a councilor and challenging Bautista to a fistfight for taking his video.
Bautista filed a complaint for malicious mischief against Apacible after finding a dent on his car.
Superintendent Limuel Obon, commander of the Kamuning police station, said two police officers caught on video being cursed by Apacible – Senior Police Officer 1 Jaime Morato and PO1 Randel Candelaria – committed lapses when they allowed the student to speed away following the commotion. – Janvic Mateo, Robertzon Ramirez
