MANILA, Philippines - A still unidentified man was shot dead after grabbing the gun of a Quezon City policeman in front of the Sto. Niño Church in Manila on Friday.

Homicide investigator Senior Police Officer 2 Jonathan Bautista said the man’s motive has yet to be established.

According to initial police reports, Police Officer 1 Jayson Cervantes of the Quezon City Police District was sitting on his Yamaha Mio parked in front of the church when the man grabbed his gun.

The man failed to get the gun, however, because of the lock in the holster. The two grappled as the man persisted in trying to remove Cervantes’ gun from its holster.

Cervantes punched the man, drew his gun and shot the man, described by witnesses as between 35 and 40 years old, about 5’9” tall, and with a Bahala Na Gang tattoo.

The man wore several layers of clothing, three shirts and two pairs of shorts, police said. This is usually done by criminals to escape from law enforcers chasing them.
