3 nabbed in anti-illegal gambling drive

MANILA, Philippines - A 74-year-old woman and two others were arrested during a drive against illegal gambling in eastern Metro Manila Thursday.

Dolores Ogario; tricycle driver Raul Bucayan, 45; and Marlyn Beatriz, 53, were reportedly collecting bets for the illegal numbers game jueteng along Francisco street in Barangay Bagong Ilog, Pasig City when they were arrested by members of the Eastern Police District (EPD) District Special Operations Unit (DSOU).

Police officers confiscated bet lists, P1,000 cash in different denominations, ballpens and three bags, DSOU chief Superintendent Allan Umipig said.

The campaign against jueteng and other forms of illegal gambling was ordered by EPD director Senior Superintendent Elmer Jamias when he assumed the EPD’s top post on Aug. 18.

Ogario, Bucayan and Beatriz refused to reveal the financiers of their jueteng operation but sources identified him as a certain “Cris.”
