Carabao goes wild in Quezon City

MANILA, Philippines — A carabao that was about to be slaughtered went wild in Quezon City yesterday morning, goring at least three persons.

The female carabao escaped from a 10-wheeler truck as the vehicle stopped at Mega-Q Mart’s slaughterhouse along Ermin Garcia street at around 3 a.m., according to Police Officer 1 Lloyd Serafica.

He said the carabao gored butcher Junet Rufino, 35, in the buttocks.

The carabao destroyed the lobby of a hotel, entered an office building and attacked Maria Betty Tanion, 32, and utility worker Willy Aris, 44.

The two were confined at the Quirino Memorial Medical Center. The carabao had gored Aris’ right leg while Tanion was reported to have suffered head wounds.

Tanion remains confined while the two men were released after being treated.

Other reports state as many as seven people were hurt in the incident.

Authorities caught the animal at the call center building, Serafica said.

He said the truck, driven by Domingo Nocedal Jr., 30, was loaded with 30 carabaos and nine cows from Naga City.

Nocedal and his helpers – Dante Floresca, 39; Edwin Perez, 31; and Adrian Fresco, 25 – were arrested following the incident.

Senior Police Officer 1 Kingly James Bagay said Nocedal was freed after he was found to have had nothing to do with the handling and safekeeping of the animals.

The helpers were charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple injuries yesterday for “failing to hold the ropes that restrained the beast,” Bagay said.
