MANILA, Philippines - Car rental firms and car owners who rent out their vehicles should take extra precautions against carjackers who disguise themselves as prospective buyers, Marikina Mayor Del de Guzman said yesterday.
He issued the warning after a Marikina-based businessman, Leonard Jose Bacani, 35, was run over by a man who rented his vehicle in Mendez, Cavite Saturday night. The vehicle was abandoned nearby, with a damaged tire and side mirror.
The man who rented his vehicle left documents identifying him as Sherwin Alcantara. A photo of Alcantara, taken by Bacani’s companion while they were finalizing the vehicle rental, was shared by the Marikina City public information office on Facebook.
De Guzman said those renting out vehicles should ask for identification cards and other papers as well as document the transaction process.
“If possible, conduct a background check before closing any transaction. This measure can ensure your safety especially now that the summer season is drawing near and there will be vacations and out-of-town trips and car rentals will be in high demand,” he added.
De Guzman instructed the Marikina police to give him regular updates on Bacani’s case.
