PCCI exec faces immigration raps

Edu Punay - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - An executive of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) is in trouble for allegedly misrepresenting himself as a Filipino citizen.

Joseph Sy, president of Global Ferronickel Holdings Inc., will be charged with violation of immigration laws, according to Immigration Commissioner Siegfred Mison.

Sy failed to produce documents to prove his nationality such as school records in the Philippines, Mison said.

“He failed to address the issue about his lack of Philippine school records and work history prior to 2007. He also failed to show identification cards from 1966 to 2007,” Mison explained.

Sy is a member of the board of PCCI, the country’s biggest business association.

Mison reversed an earlier resolution issued by then acting immigration commissioner Abdullah Mangotara, who dismissed the deportation case against Sy for lack of jurisdiction.

Mangotara, who served as acting immigration chief while Mison was abroad, dismissed the case filed against Sy by residents of Zambales, led by Nestor Cas, on July 28, 2014.
