Toddler dies, baby hurt in Malabon blaze

Ramil Bajo, Rey Galupo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A two-year-old girl was burned to death while her two-month-old brother was badly injured when a fire razed at least 10 houses in Barangay Catmon, Malabon City on Wednesday.

The fire started at the second floor of Julia Lopez’s house in Dulong Hernandez at past 8 p.m., according to Senior Fire Officer 4 Albino Torres.

Julia left her daughter, Jenny, sleeping in one of the rooms on the first floor of the house as she tried to save her baby, Jericho.

The baby suffered second-degree burns while Jenny’s body was found on a pile of debris in what remained of their house.

The two-hour blaze, which reached second alarm, destroyed an estimated P200,000 worth of property.

More than 20 families were left homeless and the local social welfare department had started distributing relief goods yesterday.
