MANILA, Philippines - Only two crimes perpetrated by motorcycle-riding men were recorded in Mandaluyong City in the three months after the city government passed an ordinance banning unrelated men from riding the same motorcycle, an official said yesterday.
Mayor Benjamin Abalos Jr. said they recorded zero incidents for September and one each for October and November.
In 2013, the crimes involving motorcycle-riding men were recorded at 19 cases for September, 22 for October and 24 for November.
The city police also arrested a total of 874 violators of the ordinance as of Nov. 4, with 666 of them non-residents of the city.
The enforcement of the ordinance, passed last Sept. 4, is on a six-month dry run, Abalos said, adding that with the drop in crimes involving motorcycle-riding men, it is likely that the ordinance will be permanently implemented.
Several cities in Metro Manila, especially San Juan, are closely monitoring the results of the ordinance.
