MANILA, Philippines - The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), one of the most trusted government agencies in fighting crime and resolving cases, is celebrating its 78th anniversary today.

NBI chief Virgilio Mendez said that while bureau agents and employees have reached their goals to serve the public, there is always room for improvement.

“We have to improve. We are not saints, but we are doing the best we can to gain the trust of the people,” Mendez said.

The NBI plans to initiate several programs this year to better serve the public.

“We will be setting up an online payment system for those getting clearances. We will also improve our case management system,” Mendez said.

The NBI, which is the lead investigative arm of the government, was established on Nov. 13, 1936.

The bureau is under the direct supervision of the Department of Justice.

The NBI considers itself “a vital tool in the pursuit of truth and justice.”

The bureau’s investigation capabilities have been vital in solving crimes including, murder, drug trafficking and gambling.

The bureau also helps in the fight against corruption. It conducted a probe into the Priority Development Assistance Fund or pork barrel of lawmakers that led to the filing of charges and detention of several government officials, including Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla.

With this year’s theme, “Makabagong NBI Tungo sa Katotohanan at Katarungan,” the bureau wants to be recognized for nobility, bravery and integrity.
