‘Back rider ban in Mandaluyong successful’
MANILA, Philippines - Not a single crime involving motorcycle-riding criminals was recorded in Mandaluyong City during the first month of implementation of an ordinance banning two unrelated men from riding the same motorcycle, officials said yesterday.
Ordinance 550 exempts females and children aged seven to 10 from the back rider ban, which aims to reduce the number of crimes perpetrated by criminals on motorcycles.
Mayor Benjamin Abalos Jr. was elated over the zero-crime incidence report.
“The result is encouraging. I’m congratulating our local police, barangay officials and other stakeholders for the success in our endeavor to make the city business-friendly and a peaceful and orderly place to live in,” Abalos said.
The city government started implementing the ordinance on Sept. 4 after a 15-day trial period.
At least 110 back riders were arrested in Mandaluyong on the first day enforcers implemented the ordinance, city public information officer Jimmy Isidro said.
