Businessman killed in own home

MANILA, Philippines - A businessman was shot dead in his home in Barangay Malanday, Marikina City Tuesday night.

Witnesses said Wilfredo Viernes was seated on the sofa in his living room when an unidentified assailant barged in at around 7:30 p.m. and shot him at close range.

The assailant then walked out of the house toward a motorcycle driven by an accomplice and sped off. Investigators said no one was able to take note of the motorcycle’s plate number.

Witnesses described the gunman as between 5’2” and 5’4” in height, and wearing a hat to conceal his face while the driver of the motorcycle was slim and clad in a black jacket and a helmet.

Investigators are eyeing Viernes’ lending business as a possible motive for his killing.
