Mandatory ‘water break’ for QC studes mulled

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Quezon City council is looking into a proposed ordinance that will make “water breaks” compulsory in all public and private elementary and high schools in the city.

Second district Councilor Ramon Medalla said kidney-related illnesses may be prevented if students are able to meet the recommended daily water intake of eight glasses a day.

He cited a study conducted in Cotabato, where over 20 people have died due to kidney-related diseases during a six-month period this year.

Medalla said urinary illnesses may be prevented if regular drinking of water is institutionalized in schools.

“Requiring students to drink enough water will help them maintain balance of body fluids, flush out toxins, prevent kidney stones and boost the immune system,” he said.
