PNP issues tips to prevent ATM heists

MANILA, Philippines - Holders of automated teller machine (ATM) cards can avoid being victimized by robbers and thieves by following a few tips, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said yesterday.

In its official Facebook account, the PNP said cardholders should keep their personal identification number to themselves.

Cardholders should handle bank transactions personally and handle the card as it if was actual money, the PNP said.

“Always be on alert and think of the personal safety when using an ATM,” the PNP said.

Prior to making ATM withdrawals, cardholders should check the machine for devices at the card slot and keypad, which would allow thieves to make a copy of the card.   

The PNP also said cardholders must keep records of all transactions.
