MANILA, Philippines - A group of businessmen will launch today a cleanup drive to revive the Ermita-Malate tourist belt in Manila.
The campaign, dubbed “Harap Ko, Likod Mo: Sagot Ko,” aims to rid Malate and Ermita of street dwellers, illegal vendors and other eyesores to entice foreign and local tourists to visit the city, Kenneth John Montegrande, spokesman for the Ermita-Manila Business Owners Association, said.
He said Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada vowed to help in the campaign.
The group sought the help of the Manila Police District to thwart lawless elements preying on tourists.
Montegrande expressed hope they will be able to bring back the former glory of Ermita and Malate.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the Departments of Social Welfare and Development and Public Works and Highways are also supporting the campaign.
