NAIA beefs up security after Pakistan airport attack

MANILA, Philippines - The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has imposed stricter security measures after militants attacked the Jinnah International Airport in Pakistan Sunday night, leaving 26 people dead, an official said yesterday.

Vicente Guerzon, assistant general manager for security and emergency services of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), told The STAR he issued the alert order after 10 men wearing military uniforms shot their way into the airport, Pakistan’s largest, and proceeded to its old terminal, where chartered and private planes are located.

He ordered security personnel to be stricter in implementing the “no ID, no entry” policy and to check the identification cards of those working at NAIA’s four terminals, including cargo areas.

A source said the MIAA should hold anti-terror exercises that include securing the terminals as well as the cargo areas, which are considered “gray areas.”
