MANILA, Philippines - A Quezon City councilor has proposed a measure requiring water concessionaires operating in Metro Manila to repair over a hundred non-operational fire hydrants in the city.
Sixth district Councilor Melencio Castelo said 142 of the 658 fire hydrants in the city are not working and have to be repaired.
Castelo asked the Manila Water Services Inc. and the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System to address the problem.
He did not identify the location of the said fire hydrants in his proposed measure. But he said they should be operational in cases of fire.
“Having a quick access to water will save hundreds of lives,†said Castelo.
The proposed measure is currently pending before the city council. Once approved, the city government will forward copies of the resolution to the two concessionaires.
