MANILA, Philippines - A Quezon City councilor has proposed an ordinance that will set a speed limit of 40 kilometers per hour along Katipunan Avenue.
“There is an urgent need to strictly enforce a maximum speed limit along Katipunan to prevent accidents resulting in loss of lives anddamage to property due to reckless driving,†Councilor Allan Benedict Reyes said.
Once approved, the measure will set a speed limit on all motor vehicles traversing the avenue from Tandang Sora to White Plains.
The restriction will not cover drivers of emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks, Reyes said.
He proposed a penalty of P2,000 to P5,000 for violators.
Violation that results in damage to property or loss of life would merit an endorsement to the Land Transportation Office and the Office of the City Prosecutor for judicial proceedings.
In proposing the ordinance, Reyes cited a section of the local government code, which mandates the city to regulate traffic in all streets and bridges within its jurisdiction.
