Don’t make cops beg for retirement benefits – Purisima

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima gave Directorate for Personnel and Records Management (DPRM) personnel a dressing down yesterday for the slow processing of police officers’ retirement benefits.

He told DPRM personnel, headed by Chief Superintendent Jaime Morente, to speed up the process and not make police officers who are about to retire virtually beg for the benefits that rightfully belong to them.

“You (DPRM) are tasked to facilitate the process wherein our policemen can get their benefits. So please take good care of them,” Purisima said.

A uniformed police officer retires from the service upon reaching the age of 56 while a civilian employee of the PNP retires at the age of 60.

Purisima issued the order after receiving numerous complaints from policemen about the slow processing of their retirement papers.

“I just reminded them about their duties and responsibilities. These police officers have served the people and country and they are entitled to these benefits. The least that we could do to show gratitude for their years of service is to ease their burden on the retirement process,” he said.

Purisima said the DPRM personnel should improve the processing of retirement benefits because the day will come when they themselves will leave the service and have their papers processed.
