MANILA, Philippines - An ex-convict was killed by a police officer after he ran amuck in Tala, Caloocan City yesterday.

Concerned citizens sought the assistance of watchmen in Barangay 185 after Daniel Bautista, 24, reportedly terrorized the residents of Ilang-Ilang street at around 12:30 a.m.

Bautista, who served time for robbery and snatching, was armed with a pen gun and ice pick, according to a police report.

Barangay tanod Wilson Tablate and Police Officer 2 Michael Pineda rushed to the scene.

Upon seeing them, Bautista pulled out his gun and shouted that he is “not going to be arrested alive.” He then ran into a house, with Pineda and Tablate chasing him.

Bautista shot Tablate. Pineda then shot the suspect, who died on the scene.

Tablate’s condition was reported to be stable.

Investigators recovered the pen gun, an ice pick, and a spent 9mm shell at the crime scene.

Superintendent Ferdie del Rosario, Caloocan police investigation division chief, said Bautista’s family refused to file charges against Pineda, claiming that the suspect had been a problem child.

Bautista’s father told police that his son beat him up sometime last year and that he was out of control.
