MANILA, Philippines - A woman is facing charges after she was arrested on Tuesday afternoon for allegedly conning another woman into buying a fake phone.
Geneva Gabino, 21, was arrested in an entrapment at a mall. She was charged with estafa and selling without a permit.
The complainant, Manilyn Jole-jole, 21, discovered the deceit after she paid P18,000 for an iPhone 5 last month.
Jole-jole found Gabino's ad on shopping website www.sulit.com.ph. She met Gabino in person at a coffee shop in a mall on Feb. 18, during which she inspected the smartphone, which seemed genuine.
Jole-jole paid P18,000 for the phone. While still at the mall, she brought out the phone to switch it on. She realized that the phone she had was just an imitation.
The victim tried to contact Gabino but the suspect’s cell phone had been turned off. She reported the fraud to the police.
