Erap: Eco-marathon to redeem Rizal Park’s image
MANILA, Philippines - Despite snarling the flow of traffic on Roxas Boulevard, the Shell Eco-Marathon will redeem the image of Rizal Park, tarnished by the 2010 hostage-taking, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada said yesterday.
He asked for understanding from motorists affected by the event, for which part of Roxas Boulevard was closed to vehicular traffic from Feb. 2 to 12.
In a telephone interview with The STAR, Estrada said the eco-marathon is a boost to the economy, not only of Manila, but also of the entire country.
“We cannot do anything. Anyway, it is only a one-week event. I appeal to the motorists for understanding and to continue to bear with us,†Estrada said, adding that one lane has been opened to ease the traffic on the boulevard.
He said the international image of Rizal Park, where the Quirino Grandstand is located, was affected by the hostage crisis, during which a disgruntled policeman killed eight Hong Kong tourists before he himself was shot dead by a police sniper.
Estrada said the event has brought more than 3,000 tourists into the country.
Motorists complained on Monday of heavy traffic along Roxas Boulevard and nearby areas due to the eco-marathon.
Manila Police District traffic bureau head Chief Inspector Olivia Sagaysay had earlier asked motorists for understanding.
