MANILA, Philippines - Police officers will have new sets of uniforms by May, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima said Sunday.
Purisima said he has given instruction to different directorates involved in the preparation of the new police uniforms to fasttrack their work, reminding them that comfort, functionality and presentability are the prime consideration in the next sets of police uniforms.
“We have completed the CopWalk 1 and CopWalk 2, but we have no final decision yet on the materials and design for the new uniforms,†Purisima added.
CopWalk fashion shows were held for designers to showcase new designs and colors of police uniforms.
Some policemen were complaining that their present uniform – a gray-blue top and dark blue pants made of 100 percent polyester – is too hot. The skin irritation was aggravated by medals, which indicated their commendation and training, attached to their uniform, they said.
During CopWalk 1, Purisima approved the materials of mixed cotton and polyester for the new police uniform but not the style and the color presented, saying they were similar to the present sets of uniforms.
He pointed out that the new sets of uniforms for policemen will not entail any additional cost for the PNP or the government since each policeman is entitled to receive a P14,000 Replacement Clothing Allowance (RCA) every three years.
The PNP hopes to get about six sets of police uniforms for formal events, while in police camps, on the streets, athletic activities, patrolling the beat and patrolling the jungle.
Purisima said a cotton and polyester blend could be advisable since they are quick dry but will not easily fade under the heat of the sun.
During the CopWalk fashion shows, active members of the PNP walked the stage donning proposed uniforms. Among the highlights of the shows were the presentation of the past police uniforms, some from the pre-war era.
