UP students accused of frat rumble
MANILA, Philippines - Members of two fraternities at the University of the Philippines (UP) campus in Diliman, Quezon City were accused of participating in a rumble on Sept. 18 that left at least six persons hurt.
In a complaint filed before the UP Student Disciplinary Tribunal on Wednesday, College of Social Science and Philosophy dean Michael Tan and student council chairperson Yanna Perez alleged that Raymund Cruz Lopez, Marcus Cabrera, Don Ballustre, Mark Gabriel de Jesus, Bryan Joseph Costales, and Miguel Barreto of the Alpha Phi Beta fraternity and still unidentified members of the Beta Sigma fraternity engaged in a rumble in the area between the Palma Hall and Palma Hall annex at around 4 p.m.
The complainants said the rumble happened at an area where the Beta Sigma members are known to hang out, adding that there was “evident premeditation†on the part of the Alpha Phi Beta members.
Juan Carlo Tejano, chairperson of the UP Alyansa ng mga Mag-aaral para sa Panlipunang Katwiran at Kaunlaran, said six people were wounded in the rumble.
Tan and Perez said the penalty for participating in a rumble is expulsion.
