Inmate dies in Malabon jail

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - An inmate charged for alarm and scandal died Friday after allegedly suffering from severe chest pains and difficulty in breathing in the Malabon City police station’s detention cell.

Jeffrey Junio, 32, was declared dead on arrival at the Pagamutang Bayan ng Malabon, where he was brought by the jail officer on duty at around 5 a.m., said Inspector Marissa Santos.

Junio was brought to the police station on Aug. 7, Santos said, adding that the inmate faced charges for alarm and scandal, resistance and disobedience, and violation of an ordinance banning residents from roaming around the city without a shirt.

She said Junio was earlier brought to the hospital for a medical check-up. Police have yet to determine the cause of death of the inmate.
