Hunt on for cop in Decena ambush

MANILA, Philippines - National Capital Region Police Office director Chief Superintendent Marcelo Garbo Jr. yesterday ordered a manhunt for a Marikina policeman tagged as one of the gunmen in the failed slay try on businesswoman Christina Decena.

Garbo said Police Officer 1 Melvin Waga was on AWOL (absent without leave) at the time of the shooting of Decena in Quezon City.

Eastern Police District director Chief Superintendent Miguel Laurel sent policemen to Waga’s house in Pasig City, but the policeman was nowhere to be found.

In an earlier press conference at the Manila Police District, Decena said Waga was introduced to her by a business partner.

She said she saw the policeman at Mr. Poon’s restaurant an hour before the ambush. He even shook her hand.

Waga’s alleged accomplice, dismissed PO1 Henry Quiñones, has been arrested by the MPD.
