DPWH: Be concerned about road quality

Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Businesses and trucking firms should abide by the government’s anti-overloading policy in order to preserve the road quality in Metro Manila, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio Singson said yesterday.

In a statement, Singson said the business sector should support the government in its drive to protect roads from being damaged by requiring truckers to follow the prescribed maximum allowable gross vehicle weight (GVW) under the modified implementing rules and regulations of Republic Act 8794, which imposes motor vehicle user’s charge on owners.

“Our government is not after the collection of fines as the amount equivalent to 25 percent of registration fees for loading beyond the prescribed GVW… is not enough to repair damage on highways specially bridges, and the high risk of death and serious injuries for road users and the general public due to overloading,” he said.

Singson called on businesses to avoid truck operators “who refuse to use correct truck configuration for transporting their goods.”
