MMDA launches footbridge rehab program

Mike Frialde - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) yesterday launched its “adopt a footbridge” program, which involves private firms sponsoring the rehabilitation of footbridges.

Rehabilitated footbridges would have covered walkways to protect pedestrians from the weather, 24-hour security and their own toilets, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said.

“The beauty in this adopt-a-footbridge program is that we will now be able to repair and rehabilitate our pedestrian footbridges at no expense, since this is a government-private sector partnership. And more than the savings, pedestrians using the footbridges will now be safer and more comfortable,” he said.

Tolentino yesterday led the program’s launch at the C-5 Libis, Eastwood footbridge in Quezon City with Mayor Herbert Bautista and representatives of AMSI Builders and Illuminate Dynamic Media, Inc. (IDMI).

Under the program, AMSI Builders and IDMI will finance the repair, rehabilitation and improvement of the footbridges in Metro Manila.

The MMDA chief said ornamental plants will be placed along the bridge to reduce air pollution. Proper lighting will also be installed, along with closed-circuit televison cameras and 24-hour roving security personnel, he added.

Aside from toilets and urinals, there will also be provisions for persons with disabilities at these footbridges, Tolentino said.

“With all these amenities, using the pedestrian footbridges will be a more pleasant commuter experience,” he said.
