MMDA activates flood rescue battalion
MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has mobilized its newly created rescue battalion to respond to traffic jams brought about by flash floods in various parts of the metropolis, an official said yesterday.
The battalion, deployed from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., will respond to any traffic buildup caused by flooded streets, clear up clogged canals and help stranded pedestrians, said MMDA assistant general for operations Emerson Carlos.
The MMDA’s flood rescue unit will also apprehend persons who deliberately block culverts and canals, causing floods, and then put up makeshift bridges where pedestrians can pass for a fee, he said.
Carlo said the MMDA will set up its own passageways for pedestrians in flooded areas.
