3 of GMA’s co-accused in plunder case post bail
MANILA, Philippines - Three of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s co-accused in a P365.9-million plunder case were released on bail yesterday after the Sandiganbayan granted their petitions seeking temporary liberty while on trial for the offense.
Former Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) chairman of the board Sergio Valencia and former board member Manuel Morato both paid P500,000 while Raymundo Roquero shelled out P700,000.
The Sandiganbayans First Division has yet to rule on similar petitions for bail filed by Arroyo, who remains under hospital arrest at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center, and former budget and accounts manager Benigno Aguas.
“I am thankful that finally I can enjoy the warmth of the sun on my face again,†said Morato, 79, who recently underwent a triple heart bypass operation at the St. Luke’s Medical Center.
In its 44-page ruling, the anti-graft court said the Ombudsman’s prosecutors failed to present sufficient evidence during the bail hearings that would warrant the denial of Valencia, Morato, and Roquero’s motions.
The anti-graft court said its decision to grant bail to Valencia, Morato, and Roquero should not be interpreted that the Office of the Ombudsman’s entire case for alleged misuse of the PCSO confidential and intelligence funds from 2008 to 2010 is weak.
