Burglars tunnel into moneychanger shop, steal P.8 M

Reinir Padua - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Burglars dug a tunnel to break into a moneychanger shop in Cubao, Quezon City and steal P800,000 in cash and three shotguns, police said yesterday.

The tunnel underneath the Emerald Moneychanger, owned by Ranie Carlos, at the Opulent Building at the corner of Gen. Roxas Avenue and EDSA was discovered by employee Rowena Agbuya when she arrived at the shop at around 10 a.m. yesterday, according to Quezon City Police District Station 7 commander Superintendent Ronnie Montejo.

The burglars, who destroyed the shop’s vault to get the money, left behind two hydraulic jacks. Montejo said it was not clear when the burglars started digging the tunnel.

He noted that the building had five guards during the day shift and four on night shift but none of them noticed anything unusual since they were only conducting perimeter security.
