MANILA, Philippines - A non-government organization is offering college scholarships to 1,000 promising high school graduates this school year.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has signed an agreement with Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) for the provision of four-year Bachelor of Science Education scholarships in selected schools nationwide.

The 1000 Teachers Program (TP) is a flagship scholarship program of PBEd, which aims to uplift the image and quality of the teaching profession by attracting the best and the brightest to join the teaching ranks.

Senior high school students who are part of the top 10 percent of their graduating class can avail themselves of the scholarships.

Scholars may major in Math, Science, English, Elementary, or Early Childhood Education, and are required to maintain an average of B to stay in the program.

The scholarship includes free tuition and miscellaneous fees, P2,000 monthly allowance, P2,000 book allowance per semester, and review and exam fees for the licensure examination for teachers or LET.

Under the DepEd-PBEd agreement, scholars are required to teach in a local public school for five years as return service immediately after passing the LET.

The program is in support of the department’s teacher requirement under the K to 12 program, which the Asian Development Bank estimated at 84,616 items for around two million senior high school students in 2017.
