Ramil Bajo, Rey Galupo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A 12-year-old boy was killed while his older sister was badly injured when a fire broke out in a condominium on San Nicolas street in Binondo, Manila shortly before noon yesterday.

Kevin Uy died of suffocation while undergoing treatment at the Metropolitan Hospital while his sister Shannan, 13, was revived at the Mother and Child Hospital shortly after she was brought there by volunteer firefighters. She will be transferred to Chinese General Hospital.

Volunteer fireman Mark Angelo Ong said the door of Unit 501 at the Peace Building was already on fire, trapping the siblings, who hid under a blanket. They were found when the fire was put under control an hour later.

Chief Inspector Bonifacio Carta, head of the Manila Fire District’s investigation division, estimated the damage to property at around P500,000.
