Mother of student crushed by cement mixer won’t file case

Reinir Padua - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The mother of a college student killed in Tuesday’s accident in Quezon City yesterday said she would not file a case against the driver of the cement mixer.

Salvacion Inzon, 64, said she had forgiven Reynaldo Guarte who was detained in jail following the accident that killed 20-year-old Marie Cherrie.

“He has a family. What happened was not intentional, it was an accident,” she said.

The victim’s mother said the driver was not under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol during the accident.

The tanker’s brakes malfunctioned before it turned over and hit a jeepney along Araneta Avenue.

“After protecting her for 20 years, she died on the second day of her on-the- job training,” Salvacion said. “It’s God’s will. Maybe it was the right time for her to go.”

Marrie Cherrie was rushed by rescue workers to the Sta. Teresita Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

She was a senior Business Administration major at Sienna College.

SPO4 Raymundo Layug, head of the Quezon City Police District-Traffic Sector 1, said they would release Guarte once they receive a written document from the Inzon family that they would no longer press charges against him.
