North Harbor sets up better passenger, cargo system

Ramil Bajo, Rey Galupo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Manila North Harbor Port Terminal Inc. (MNHPI) has set up a system to make travel through the terminal a more pleasant experience in time for the Holy Week break, an official said yesterday.

“Every year, we anticipate the arrival of thousands of passengers during the Holy Week break but this year we have put in place a better system that will make travel via the Manila North Harbor fast and efficient,” MNHPI chairman Michael Romero said.

MNHPI won the award to operate and modernize the North Harbor, the largest port in the country. Aside from managing the passenger terminal, MNHPI will also improve and modernize cargo handling, berth and storage management and other related port services.

Romero said port employees are working double-time to assist passengers and handle cargo going in and out of the port. He added that they are constantly coordinating with shipping lines using the port to ensure a smooth and organized passenger and cargo handling system.

Romero also noted that they are implementing improved security measures to ensure the safety of passengers and their cargo. Aside from the police and coast guard contingents, the MNHPI also has its own security forces.

A medical team is also in place to assist passengers during their trip, he said.

He said they will continue to improve the system as they are soon to open a new terminal for passengers in the North Harbor in order to facilitate the orderly and trouble-free boarding and disembarkation and handling of their cargo.

“The long queues of passengers for booking, boarding delays and missing or lost cargo will be a thing of the past with the new and modern Manila North Harbor,” Romero said.

He said the new passenger terminal is only the beginning of his company’s bid to transform North Harbor into a world-class port.

“We have just started and we will continue with our commitment to make Manila North Harbor, our primary passenger and cargo terminal, to be a world-class maritime hub which can compete with our Asian neighbors,” he said.
